‘’The quality of life is determined by its activities” – Aristotle.
The Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle emphasized the importance of co-curricular activities centuries ago. The co-curricular activities benefit the students in numerous ways. It is scientifically proven and many researchers have concluded that co-curricular activities are imperative for students’ holistic development.
The national education
policy 2020 clearly states “The curriculum must include basic arts, crafts,
humanities, games, sports and fitness, languages and literature, culture and
values, in addition to science and mathematics to develop all aspects and
capabilities of learners and make education more well-rounded, useful and
fulfilling to the learner”.
The NEP 2020 clearly emphasises the need to
foster holistic development in students so that they successfully achieve 21st-century life skills.
Since the umpteen benefits have been
associated with co-curricular activities, they have become a fundamental part
of CBSE schools. These activities are mandatory for every CBSE student and are
fairly balanced along with the curriculum so that each student gets the best of
both worlds.
Benefits of co-curricular activities: Co-curricular activities help to develop various aspects of the personality of the students. There is a need for emotional, physical, spiritual, and moral development for the holistic development of students that is complemented and supplemented by Co-curricular Activities. Some of the benefits of co-curricular activities are:
- Better mental and physical health- Students get to break out from academic stress and monotonous routine. Participation in any of the co-curricular activity provides mental relaxation and rejuvenation. This in turn promotes better academic performance
- Discover hidden talent-Many students when exposed to a plethora of co-curricular activities, discover their hidden talents. Students get to learn something that could become their passion and they might pursue it in future as their career.
- Boost
self-esteem and confidence – There are many children who struggle in one or the other
academic subjects. They began to perceive themselves as “Not good at anything”.
A students self-esteem takes a big blow and learning takes a back seat. School
becomes a stressful place. It is for this very reason the role of co-curricular
activities becomes crucial. Students who discover their strength and passion
through co-curricular activities gain confidence and self-respect.
- Social opportunities – Another transformational benefit of co-curricular activities is the development of social skills. Students get to interact with other students who share similar interests. Away from the classroom setting, they get the opportunity to make new friends, communicate and discuss new ideas.
- Time management – Students learn to balance academic workload and co-curricular activities. They gradually comprehend how to prioritise their work and do it in a short time. Students learn to be disciplined, study effectively in the time they have. They learn to share time between two domains.
- Problem-solving skills – Co-curricular activities develop and enhance problem-solving, reasoning and critical thinking in the students when faced with a challenging situation, students find innovative ways to overcome them.
- Leadership Skills – A student who shies away from taking lead in a classroom, might very well take initiative in the co-curricular activities that interest him/her.
- Teamwork skills – Working amicably with others is one of the most important crucial life skills. Participating in co-curricular activities makes students learn to respect their teammates' opinions, cooperate, share ideas and knowledge and solve problems.
- Developing sense of commitment and responsibility – Students who participate in co-curricular activities develop a greater sense of commitment and responsibility. They leave no stone unturned to fulfil their passion. Gradually this becomes a habit and infiltrates all facets of their lives. These activities also foster a sense of accountability and responsibility in students
- Communication skills –Students who are shy or have low self-esteem tend to have verbal communication issues. These skills can never be solely developed and enhanced through classroom instructions. Co-curricular activities like debates, just minute speaking sessions, theatre, role play etc play a prodigious role in honing communication skills.
