Effective Ways To Fight Social Media Addiction - DPS Indirapuram

Blog by - Top Schools in Indirapuram

Introduction

One of the most commonly used terms nowadays is "social media." There are approximately 2.4 million users of three social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The more concerning statistic is that we spend 14% of our time on these pages. It means that some of us may spend more than 4 hours per day on these pages, becoming addicted to social media and fearful of missing out.

Here are the social media addiction facts and dangers:

  • When you spend more time connecting to social media pages, you spend less time with yourself, your family, and your friends.

  • When you are addicted, you miss out on a lot of things in life. Instead of enjoying every moment of your vacation, you focus solely on taking beautiful photographs and sharing them with others online.

  • Your ability to concentrate gradually deteriorates. And you'll become even more aggressive if you can't access your social media pages for 5 or 10 minutes.

  • Scientists have demonstrated that being online on these pages causes negative feelings such as loneliness, boredom, and even anxiety, depression, and self-doubt.

When you can control and reduce your time spent on social media, you will have more time to do other, more productive things, and your relationships with others will improve. Last but not least, you will reduce your chances of developing anxiety as well as other risks associated with social media overuse.

Effective Ways To Fight Social Media Addiction

While getting rid of social media is difficult, you can still turn back before it's too late. Just know what you need to do and be determined; it will take some time before you can effectively manage your time both online and offline.

Here are some of the most effective ways to prevent and treat social media addiction:

Disable Alerts

When a new notification appeared on my phone's screen, I would quickly navigate to my page. Worse, I not only checked for the notification, but I frequently found myself wandering around 2 minutes later. The first step is to disable the push notifications of these social networking apps. This would make you think less about the app every now and then.

You could also consider deleting the apps from your phone so that you have to access them through a browser. Allow the page to remember your password, so you don't have to type it in every time. Doing so will make logging into your social media pages much more difficult, and you will be less tempted.

Focus

You don't have to be aware of what happens to everyone on the planet. As a result, you should unfollow the majority of celebrities' social media pages. Select only a few of them to follow.

Furthermore, you can sort your Facebook list into smaller groups such as friends, family, colleagues, and total strangers so that you only see updates from the groups that are important to you.

Also, keep the number of social media pages you use to a minimum. Use only those that are most relevant to you. For example, I limited my use to Facebook and LinkedIn. Facebook allows me to communicate with my friends and family. LinkedIn is for my professional life. Because only a few of my friends use Instagram and Twitter, I consider these two pages superfluous.

Set a timer

First, determine how much time you will devote to checking your social media pages on a daily basis. You should also consider the time you log in to your social media pages. Divide your time if you can't resist the urge to check these pages every 5 minutes. For example, set aside some time in the morning, noon, afternoon, and evening before going to bed to go online.

Then, whenever you visit these pages, set a timer. When the timer expires, you should log out. It will take a lot of willpower to keep yourself from staying for a few more minutes, but you will soon realise how much time you have for other things.

Conclusion

Once you become addicted to something, it is difficult to break the habit. However, admitting that you are addicted is a huge step toward dealing with it and preventing it from happening again.

There are numerous things you can do to avoid becoming addicted to social media. They include turning off notifications in your settings, focusing on your primary task, setting a timer, and only checking when you have a specific reason to. I hope you find these tips simple to implement and effective in overcoming your social media addiction.
